AMBROTYPE CIVIL WAR ? PHOTO ON GLASS - RARE!!!Up for consideration is this wonderful Confederate ? ambrotype which measures approx. 5 1/2" by 4 1/2". The image of the 3 men are on a half plate early clear glass ambrotype with a black painted backing. Most of the black paint is missing as shown in photo #7 above. The men appear to heading off to battle. The one on the left has a long barreled pistol across his waist. The middle guy and the one on the right both are holding really long daggers, which are resting on their legs and the tip is over their shoulders. The man in the middle appears to have some kind of brown leather belt around the top of his coat, which possibly is holding his pistol. There is also some type of leather strap which has fallen off his left shoulder. If these guys aren't heading off to war, then they must be bandits, because they appear to be very proud of their weapons! The reason that I think they are Confederate soldiers heading to war, is because this ambrotype was found in a box of stuff from an estate sale. In the same box was the United Confederate Veterans Reunion Badge, New Orleans, dated 1906, which I also have listed. This ambrotype was framed in a very, very old wooden frame. The back appears to have been from a cigar box. Behind the ambrotype was a black piece of cloth that is most definetely NOT machine made.
